Heath Preservation

Work is continually carried out in Kongenshus Memorial Park to preserve the heather, because heather growing on the heath will weaken if it is not regenerated. The heather would die from ageing after 25-30 years, and its place would be taken over by grass. Different methods are applied to preserve the heath.

Cutting heather
The heather is cut back regularly.

Burning off the heath is another method applied at Kongenshus Heath as part of the heath preservation work. Burning can be necessary when the heather has grown too old, or if it has been exposed to an attack from the heather leaf beetle. The 5-6 mm heather leaf beetle lives off the fresh heather shoots, and as a result, the heather withers and dies.

Burning is carried out and controlled by Viborg Municipality, which also handles cutting down of trees and bushes.

The day-to-day preservation of the heath is carried out by the sheep who graze in the area, thus keeping the heather young.

Heath preservation in 2011
After the widespread infestation of heather beetles in 2009 and 2010, where upwards of 80 % of Kongenshus Heath was exposed, we have completed an intensive heath preservation project. In order to prepare for extensive nitrogen composting, the work on Kongenshus Heath started by our cutting the areas and selling the heather.

Grazing in the areas was hampered by the defoliated heather plants. The stiff stem of the plant is a great nuisance for the grazing sheep, as it pricks the sheep's eyes. A few sheep have had to undergo treatment in 2010.

It is a huge wish that the area will be cut into a mosaic-like structure. This is to encourage the rapid return of animals and plants in the project area. It is particularly important that areas with old heather be left, so that birds on the heath can establish nests there.

Access to the park
Access to the Memorial Park is free of charge. Signs with maps of the area can be found by the entrances to the Memorial Park and by the observation tower. You can follow marked hiking routes from these starting points. Please show consideration for nature and the sheep: Dogs must be kept on a lead.

There are car parks by the hotel Kongenshus Kro og Hotel, and by the observation tower. Access to the Memorial Park is free for both buses and cars.

For people with reduced mobility

The Nature Centre and one of the hiking paths have been laid out for wheelchair users and others with reduced mobility. Furthermore, the observation tower is equipped with a lift to the observation platform six metres above ground.

Eating in the open
Enjoy your food in the picnic area around the observation tower. You will also find a bonfire site by the shelters behind the observation tower. Look after nature, and nature will look after you.
