The Carlos Scarpa Award

In 2004, Kongenshus Memorial Park received the international Carlo Scarpa Garden Award.

The motivation for the award was that the Memorial Park by Viborg unites natural elements, local history, national spirit, landscape transformation and art. The committee was particularly interested in Kongenshus Memorial Park’s relation to the history of the transformation of the Danish heath into agricultural land, and of how the heath farmers joined forces to buy the remains of the heath so that the landscape they had worked so hard to convert into agricultural land could continue to exist in its previous form.

This was the 15th time the award, which is sponsored by the Benetton Research Foundation, was given out. The award has previously been given to areas in, among other countries, Sweden, Brazil, Romania, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Germany.

The Scarpa Award is named after Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) whose work involved landscaping of areas in the north-eastern part of Italy, from which the Benetton family originates. To the Scarpa Committee, it is not only a question of preserving original landscapes. Their landscape philosophy is that landscapes will always be in a state of change, and that, as in the case of Kongenshus Memorial Park, human intervention is necessary in order to preserve certain types of landscape.

The Committee believes that this task has been accomplished to perfection in Kongenshus Memorial Park, which opened in 1953, and which continues to be a part of the Danish natural history that the heath represented until the mid-1850s.
