the observation Tower

In 2013/2014, the independent institution Kongenshus Memorial Park for the Cultivators of the Heath had an observation tower erected on Kongenshus Heath. The purpose of the tower is to make it possible for all to enjoy the optimum nature experience of a 360-degree panoramic view of the landscape's plant and animal life on the 1,200 hectares of listed heath.

The tower is located in the vegetation to the right of the Nature Café at the heart of Kongenshus Heath, and the observation platform, which is found six metres above ground, partially blends in with the planting.

The tower is constructed as a purely wooden structure. The roof consists of wooden shingle tiles, and the rest of the structure has been left untreated and will, over time, gain a patina that is in harmony with nature.

Under the roof of the tower, posters have been mounted, which tell the story of the heath. The posters have been prepared in collaboration with Viborg Museum.

Around the tower, there is free Internet access, so that all visitors have the opportunity to share their fantastic photos of the view online with friends and family.

observation tower given accessibility award

The Disability Council in Viborg Municipality has awarded the annual Accessibility Award 2014 to the observation tower in Kongenshus Memorial Park.

The Council emphasised, among other things, that the observation tower is an excellent example of how a building can be planned and executed to ensure that all citizens, including citizens with reduced mobility, have the chance to visit the place, and, in this case, to get right to the top of the tower and experience the unique and beautiful view of the special nature.

In its assessment, the Disability Council stresses that it is easy to get close to the tower in a car or other vehicle, so that walking-impaired people and wheelchair users can get close to the site.

The user-friendly lift is also appreciated, as is the cosy, open area at the bottom of the tower, where tables are of a height that makes it possible to drive wheelchairs right up to the tabletop, and the benches can be moved.

The observation tower was constructed with a view to ensuring that walking-impaired people and others with reduced mobility would be able to experience the unique nature of the heath at a height of six metres. A lift has been integrated, which transports visitors with reduced mobility up to the observation platform.

The lift is accessible from 8:00 am to 10:00 pm every day during the period 1 April through 19 October.

The tower is accessible in a way that complies with the specifications in the standard 'DS 3028 Accessibility for All' as well as with the recommendations and directions from disability organisations.

Access to the park
Access to the Memorial Park is free of charge. Signs with maps of the area can be found by the entrances to the Memorial Park and by the observation tower. You can follow marked hiking routes from these starting points. Please show consideration for nature and the sheep: Dogs must be kept on a lead.

There are car parks by the hotel Kongenshus Kro og Hotel, and by the observation tower. Access to the Memorial Park is free for both buses and cars.

For people with reduced mobility

The Nature Centre and one of the hiking paths have been laid out for wheelchair users and others with reduced mobility. Furthermore, the observation tower is equipped with a lift to the observation platform six metres above ground.

Eating in the open
Enjoy your food in the picnic area around the observation tower. You will also find a bonfire site by the shelters behind the observation tower. Look after nature, and nature will look after you.
